Our parish offers a variety of adult education opportunities through study groups, classes, and special guest speakers. Please see the Sunday bulletin for details regarding continuous study groups as well as up-coming special events.
The Christian Initiation of Adults is a process by which adults who are either unbaptized or from another Christian faith prepare for full communion with the Catholic Church and complete reception of the sacraments of initiation. Any one who is interested in this process or knows of someone who is interested should contact the parish office.
Has marriage, separation, divorce or remarriage left you inactive? Do you feel alienated or as if there is no one to listen? Then join an open meeting for returning and inactive Catholics. The parish ministerial and education staff will be more than happy to discuss options and issues with anyone seeking assistance. Please see the bulletin for the current day and time of our 6 day series or call the office for an appointment.
As our parish grows we are faced with the very real risk of losing our sense of fellowship. Small Christian Communities (SCC's) serve to fill the need for intimacy that is often times lost in a large faith community. SCC's are groups of parishioners who meet periodically in each other's homes for faith discussion and prayer. The purpose of these gatherings is so that members of an SCC may make a connection between their everyday lives and their faith. The only skill necessary to be a member of an SCC is willingness to share and listen. Please consider this worthwhile, community-building activity and call the parish office for further information.
The parish library is a lending library dedicated to providing religious books and media for the enrichment of the St. Timothy community. Most materials can be checked out, though there is a study table for those parishioners who would prefer to sit and browse through our reference books. Nearly all of our books, periodicals and videos are donations from generous parishioners. The library is located at the north end of the church vestibule in a room it shares with the Religious Articles store, and is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 11 am and on weekends after Mass.
Sacramental Preparation
Baptism is the first and foremost sacrament of initiation into our faith community. Therefore, it is only appropriate that at least one parent of an infant brought forth for baptism must be a practicing Catholic and a member of our parish community. Baptisms are conducted according to a specific schedule set by the parish. It is necessary to contact the parish office at least one month prior to one of these dates do that all necessary arrangements may be made. These arrangements include an interview with the Director of Adult Religious Education as well as the required attendance of a parent pre-baptismal session presented by trained parishioners. There are no baptisms conducted during the season of Advent or Lent.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance) is a time when a child experiences God's forgiveness in a special way. The normal time for First Reconciliation is first grade. It is necessary that a child have had a least one year of catechetical preparation prior to the reception of the sacrament.
First Eucharist (First Communion) is a child's second sacrament of initiation and sign of unity with our faith community (the first being baptism). The normal time for a child to receive First Eucharist is second grade. In addition to the one year of preparation necessary for First Reconciliation an additional year of catechetical preparation is required before a child receives First Eucharist.
The Sacrament of Confirmation is a time when a young person is fully initiated into the Church and receives a strengthening in the presence of the Holy Spirit. The youth of our parish normally celebrate this sacrament when they are in eighth grade. Two years of catechesis and a parish/community service project are required prior to the reception of the sacrament.
Religious education is offered for parish children in pre-k through eighth grade. Classes take place on Sunday and run from late September through April (excluding Christmas Break). Registration for classes is in a late August. Children who have not fulfilled the religious education requirement will not receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist or Confirmation. However, despite the emphasis on formal religious education, parents should always remember that they are their child's primary role models and teachers in faith and life.
Couples planning to marry at St. Timothy will need to contact the parish at least six months prior to their wedding date. Marriage in the Catholic church is a sacrament and it is necessary to participate in a marriage preparation program. This includes meeting with a priest or deacon from the parish; a pre-cana presentation or attend a week-end retreat, such as "Engage Encounter". A recent copy of the baptismal certificate is required to show that you are free to marry in the Catholic Church. Local customs vary regarding the wedding liturgy and music. Married "Sponsor Couples" in the parish meet with the engaged individuals to discuss principles of Christian marriage using their own personal experiences as points of reference.
Couples who marry for the second time bring some special issues to the relationship. These issues may be positive or negative, but, in either case, they need to be examined and shared prior to the marriage. Whether the previous marriage ended in divorce or death, it is important that individuals recognize and choose what they carry into the new marriage. Even if only one partner has been married previously, both persons need to complete a special section of FOCCUS (Facilitating Open Couple Communication, Understanding & Study). Both will be involved in dealing with the effects of the past relationships and the combining of households, resources, financial and child obligations. Even if a couple is older and children have moved out of the home, established patterns of relating to family will have an impact on the new couple relationship.
The "Sponsor Couple Counselor" helps the couple to examine "where they are" with the effects of the previous marriage and to help them examine the concrete issues and adjustments that will be unique to their situation. The overall goal is to enable realistic expectations on the part of the second marriage couple and good planning which can facilitate the meeting of these good expectations.
Couples interested in being "Sponsor Couples" for those preparing for marriage can contact the pastor.
This ministry was formed in March, 1997 to promote devotion to St. Jude. The Friends of St. Jude felt this Saint was so well loved by many and came to their aid when one seemed to be deprived of all visible help or for cases despaired of. St. Jude has interceded to bring many out of the dark moments of their lives. A Mass and Novena is held the second Friday of each month. Members are also urged to attend a monthly meeting promoting the devotion and helping give others the opportunity to know and learn about St. Jude.
In 1901 in a rundown section of Los Angeles, California, students from a bible school began speaking in tongues. This outpouring of the Holy Spirit quickly spread throughout the country in all religions. In 1967 a Catholic Charismatic Renewal was started. The Holy Father proclaims this same theme "Jesus Christ is Lord". This new movement, the raising up of hands in prayer and song and the resting in the Spirit are only visible signs of what is really happening in the lives of the people who are being converted and transformed. A more intense spirituality, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the expressing of joy and peace, is surfacing among those involved. St. Timothy has its own Charismatic prayer meeting weekly. Come and observe what our parish has to offer in this renewal.
Cursillo is a worldwide movement of the Catholic Church that assist men and women in developing a deeper relationship with our Lord. The cursillo weekend (or Cursillo de Cristiandad, Spanish for "short course of Christianity") is a three day religious experience which brings the candidate into a renewed relationship with other Christians, the Church and Jesus Christ. It is designed for Christians who wish to grow in their faith and share it with others. Following the weekend, monthly Ultreya meetings are held to renew one's faith. In addition to a monthly Ultreya, small groups meet weekly to pray and share experiences of piety, study and action.
The Legion of Mary is an association of Catholic men and women who are dedicated and devoted to Mary Immaculate, the Mother of Jesus Christ.
Active members attend weekly meetings and perform apostolic work each week. The work includes visiting nursing and memory care facilities and a prison ministry. Auxiliary members recite daily prayers for the intentions of Our Blessed Mother. Meetings are held each Monday at 10:30 AM.
Oblates of St. Benedict are Christian men and women, lay and ordained, who have associated themselves with a Benedictine community (in this case, Saint Leo Abbey in St Leo, Florida) in order to enrich their Christian way of life. Oblates shape their lives by living the wisdom of Christ as interpreted by St. Benedict. They seek God by striving to become holy in their chosen way of life.
Oblates come together as local chapters to support one another and strengthen their spiritual life through liturgical celebration, instruction, and fellowship in Christ, so "that in all things God may be glorified" (Rule of St. Benedict 57:9). Anyone interested in Benedictine spirituality is welcome to participate in one of our monthly meetings. All are welcome, Oblates, Oblate novices, and any inquirers.
